Phil

Braggar

Phil Braggar was born in New York, USA, in 1925, and a few years into his life he made the irrevocable decision to become an artist. As a result of human curiosity and destiny he arrived in Mexico City in 1954, where he studied at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado La Esmeralda (National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving La Esmeralda). He worked for the next five years drawing and painting, achieving his first exhibition in 1960. From then until his death in 2018 he exhibited frequently in solo and group exhibitions.
He was a prolific, fast, and temperamental artist, with a lot of strength in his expressionist stroke which was both forceful and playful.

He had a unique way of capturing human existence in multiple ways: in context with society, its cities and portraying the great colorfulness of Mexico.

Phil was a great person, always smiling, with laughter and a unique humor who throughout 64 years of artistic career was a painter, draftsman, sculptor, and engraver, dabbling in various visual techniques such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, wood sculpture - making the cuts on the plates manually - and monotype and ink printing.

He had numerous solo and collective exhibitions, including the Independent Salon in 1968, which made him part of the Generación de la Ruptura (Rupture Generation); el Palacio de Bellas Artes (the Palace of Fine Arts); el Museo de Arte Moderno (the Museum of Modern Art); MUCA de unam (University Museum of Science and Art of the National Autonomous University of Mexico) and many more, as well as charity events and social causes.

His work has been reproduced in dozens of books and he also has a FONCA (National Fund for Culture and the Arts) edition about his work and thinking. He belonged to the Sistema Nacional de Creadores (National System of Creators) since 1996 and his paintings currently adorn the walls of important collections in Mexico, USA, and Europe.
